Archived post taken down from the Allerbridge Chapel page of the Coldridge Parish Website, withdrawn on 23rd January 2023.

Coronavirus Update - A Message for you from Allerbridge Chapel and St Matthew’s Church

Our country is now in partial lockdown and the doors of the Chapel and Church are locked too, so we want to let you know where you and your family can find Christian words and music, should you wish.

There are lots of programmes both online and on TV and radio you will already know about, such as ‘Thought for the Day’ on radio and ‘Songs of Praise’ on TV. Here are some other ideas:

Church of England https://www.churchofengland.org/  for daily prayers, links to ideas of faith and virtual services.  More options are available day by day, including a series of studies led by the Archbishop of Canterbury, and information about taking care of mental wellbeing.

Exeter Cathedral https://www.exeter-cathedral.org.uk/   for keeping in touch locally and Sunday sermons, also a nice tour of the Cathedral.

Crediton Parish Church https://www.creditonparishchurch.org.uk/  for a regular Sunday Service.

If you have visited a chapel or church whilst on holiday, you could check out their website too. You may like to sing along to a favourite hymn sometimes, and these can be found on Youtube, by searching at the top of the page.

A couple of other things ... Did you know that it takes the same time to say The Lord’s Prayer as it does to wash your hands?  Also you may have already seen that some people are lighting a candle in their window during the evening to remind them of Jesus, the Light of the World.

Here is a simple prayer that you may wish to make:  Lord Jesus, please forgive the wrong things I have done, and the good I have not done;   come into my life to be my Saviour and help me make a new start.  Amen

Thank you for taking time to read this.  If there is any help you need from either the Chapel or the Church, please contact John Smith on the SPOC in confidence and he will put you in touch with us.

BBC.CO.UK - England's Covid rules are being strengthened in response to concern over the Omicron variant

Abridged extract from www.bbc.co.uk/news, 28th November 2021

"On Saturday 27th November, Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced that England's Covid rules are to be strengthened in response to concern over the new Omicron COVID-19 variant.

New measures coming into force include:

  • From Tuesday, face coverings will once again be compulsory in shops and on public transport
  • All contacts of suspected Omicron cases will be required to self-isolate for 10 days - regardless of a person's vaccination status
  • Anyone entering the UK will require a PCR test by the end of the second day after their arrival and will need to self-isolate until they have a negative result. The change will be brought in "as soon as possible" following agreement with the other UK nations (Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland)
  • The Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) - the UK's vaccine advisory body - will consider giving the booster vaccine "to as wide as group as possible". It will also reduce the gap between the second dose and booster

It was also announced that these new rules were temporary and would be reviewed after three weeks".

Update 29th November

  • From Monday 29th, pupils at secondary schools in England are being "strongly advised" to wear face coverings in school communal areas. This guidance also applies to staff and visitors at all schools and childcare settings.

The next step in England's plan to unlock from COVID-19 restrictions

Today marks the next and most significant step yet in HM Government's unlocking plan for COVID-19 restrictions in England, with changes affecting the rules for meeting up outdoors and indoors, relaxations across hospitality, leisure and entertainment sectors PLUS a limited (but rolling) opening up of rules concerning vacation/non-essential foreign travel to/from England.

However the Government is urging both caution and a heightened sense of personal responsibility at this time as the impact from the emerging COVID-19 Variant of Concern (B1.617.2, aka the 'Indian Variant') is understood and the health responses managed.

Mid Devon District Council has been working closely with the national testing programme to reopen a test facility for Covid-19 in Cullompton. The temporary testing site is specifically for people showing symptoms of Covid-19. Anyone in England and Wales who has symptoms of the virus, whatever their age, should apply for a test.

From Friday 4 December 2020 a mobile unit will be situated in the lower section of Station Road car park, Cullompton. The facility is being delivered by Serco on behalf of the Department of Health and Social Care. The site will be open seven days a week, with opening times to be confirmed.

You should be tested as soon as possible from when you first display symptoms of the virus and should book the test online. You can read more about the testing process and can book a test using the Government’s online portal. You will need to show ID at the testing centre and should arrive at the testing site with a scheduled appointment. On some occasions testing may be available for those showing symptoms who have not secured an appointment. If you are unable to access the internet you can book a test by calling 119.

This is a drive through facility so you should arrive in a vehicle in order to be tested. Please do not leave your vehicle and take instructions upon arrival at the site. The whole site will be deep cleaned when the testing site has been closed, so that it can safely be returned to its normal use once government guidance allows.

Remember, you can spread the virus even if you don’t have symptoms.

UPDATE ON HEADBANDS FOR THE NHS

Message from Jo Dike, 28th April
"Well done everyone! This is just to let you know that as a result of the generosity of so many we have been able, during the past week, to make 90 headbands for the NHS, these being delivered to Exeter this morning. We have had so many donations of fabric, much needed large buttons and thread and several folk have been beavering away on sewing machines and stitching on all the buttons.

So we want to say a huge thank you to you all, and just mention that this project will continue for some time as the headbands are in great demand. We have discovered that there is now a national shortage of the right size buttons (upwards of 23 mm in diameter) so if you still haven’t found granny’s button box, please have a good look today!

With best wishes from the members of Coldridge WI supported by Lapford Volunteer Network

HEADBANDS FOR NHS DEVON - AN URGENT CALL FOR HELP FROM COLDRIDGE WI

Sharing an urgent request from Jo Dike on behalf of Coldridge WI...
"Finally we have been asked to do something practical in the current crisis to help all the wonderful people in the NHS and wider care sector.  They desperately need headbands to make wearing their masks more comfortable (at present lots of NHS staff have sore ears because the elastic rubs their skin, when they get hot and bothered during their long shifts).
Several Coldridge WI members have started making the headbands and have rapidly realised that we need help from our community.
What we need are the following:
o People who like using a sewing machine to help with the cutting out and machining.
o People who like sewing on buttons to do some of that (2 per headband).
o Fabric – any good condition material washable up to 60 degrees, such as polycotton sheeting or redundant duvet covers or similar. The material will be cut on the cross so needs to be a bit stretchy when pulled on the bias. Any colour/pattern will do. Please wash to 60 degrees before donating.
o Buttons same size as a 10p piece (or bigger) but without shanks – these will be big enough for the mask elastic to hitch round and stay secure. Time to get out Granny’s button box!
o Sewing thread - preferably modern polyester that should then be well behaved on the machine. If you are donating fabric and have any thread to match, that would be marvellous.
If you would like to take on making complete headbands, then we will give you the approved pattern, with some easy grid paper to make it from, together with the detailed instructions. The headbands will be given to local Devon hospitals, health centres, care homes and other appropriate front line staff. We have been told that at present supply will not outstrip demand (8,000 people work at the RD&E alone!), so there is work to be done!
If you can help with any of the above please contact Jo Dike on 01363 83329.
Many thanks and good wishes from all the members of Coldridge WI.
Jo Dike, 23rd April 2020.

COVID-19: An update from Wales & West Utilities

What follows is an extract of recent correspondence from WWU to Councillor Squires, Devon County Council, shared with Coldridge Parish Council.

"Dear Councillor Squires

COVID-19: An update from Wales & West Utilities

As we all try to adjust to the consequences of coronavirus for the UK, I wanted to let you know what Wales & West Utilities is doing in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, and to provide you with contact details should you require any specific information and/or assistance from us. With the situation evolving rapidly, our focus remains on keeping people living in your ward safe and warm at home. So we’ve paused all planned gas pipe upgrade and new connections work to prioritise keeping the gas flowing safely, responding to gas emergencies, and looking after the most vulnerable. That means if we are working in the road near you, it’s to keep communities safe.

If any residents of your ward have received a letter from the NHS advising them to ‘shield’ themselves from COVID-19, we’d encourage them sign up for the Priority Services Register. It provides free additional services if there is a power cut or in the unlikely event of an interruption to their gas supply. You can find out more at wwutilities.co.uk/priority.

If anyone living your ward smells gas, or suspects the presence of carbon monoxide, they should call us on 0800 111 999 straight away. Before visiting, we’ll ask them to let us know if anyone in the household is experiencing coronavirus symptoms or self-isolating. We’ll still come and help them, but our teams will take some additional precautions to keep everyone safe. Our team have also been issued robust social distancing guidance which follows the latest Government advice.

We would really appreciate your support in sharing these important messages as widely as possible. Please find below some suggested social media posts which you can post from your own account(s). We appreciate that you will be focused on supporting your residents. We recognise the huge demands front line health workers and other key workers, including our own team. All of us at Wales & West Utilities are grateful for the great sacrifices being made by all those serving the country in a time of need.

If you would like to know more about how we are responding to COVID-19, please do not hesitate to respond to this email.

Additionally, our Stakeholder Newsletter will to keep you updated not only on how we’re facing Coronavirus, but our other work too. Sign up here: https://wwutilities.co.uk/stayintouch/

But most of all, we hope that you and your family are well and are staying safe during these uncertain times.

With my best wishes

Rob Long

Coldridge Parish Council update during the COVID-19 outbreak

Extracted from the Coldridge 'Daily Bulletin',  8th April 2020.
"The Parish Council met on March 19th just before the main control measures were introduced and two Councillors wisely sent apologies following government advice at the time. The Council spread itself around the village hall to prevent any possible spread of COVID-19, although no Councillors had any symptoms.

Following legal advice, and to ensure the Council activities could continue, the council agreed to delegate decision-making powers to the Clerk, who is required to discuss any decisions with the Chairman and Vice-Chairman before making them. All payments still need the signatures of two Councillors, and all payments are made by cheque. Normally the next meeting would be in late May, followed by July, September and November. It is hoped the COVID-19 outbreak will be under control by the autumn so the Council can resume its normal activities. Records will be kept of any decisions made and all the Councillors kept informed.

Following publication of new legislation (The Coronavirus Act 2020), the Parish Council is not required to hold an annual meeting this year, so will not do so, and has been granted the authority to hold meetings remotely, although how this could be done in our case is unclear. There will also be revised regulation regarding the auditing and publication of the accounts for 2019/20 but as we do not know what these are.

The Council will not proceed with co-opting a Councillor to replace the late John Daw until the COVID-19 restrictions on public gatherings are eased or abolished to allow the Council to meet in one place".

MDDC Garden Waste collection service - UPDATE

Please find below content of an email received yesterday afternoon concerning possible reinstatement of garden waste collections in April.

"AN UPDATE ON OUR GARDEN WASTE COLLECTION SERVICE

Due to the current situation and latest advice regarding COVID-19 (coronavirus), the Council’s waste service has been operating with a reduced number of staff and, therefore, had to make the tough decision to suspend our Garden Waste collection service during the last two weeks. During this challenging time and maybe again in the future, it was important that we resourced our most important services and by suspending the garden waste service we were able to use these vehicles and staff to support general rubbish, food, and recycling collections.  Garden waste materials can be left for longer than two weeks and can still be home-composted.

We anticipate to restart garden waste collections on your normal fortnightly collection day next week (weeks commencing 6 and 13 April).  Information to keep residents updated is posted on our website daily:  https://www.middevon.gov.uk/residents/coronavirus-covid-19-service-updates/guidance-for-people-with-confirmed-or-possible-covid-19-how-to-dispose-of-waste/

Due to resources currently being reduced we will unfortunately still not be able to return for any individual missed collections so would ask that you do not call or contact us to report them at the present time.

Any customers whose subscriptions expired or are due to expire during the suspension will receive their reminder to renew once the service recommences.

Any collections which were cancelled due to the current situation will be added to the following year’s permit when renewed.

We apologise for any inconvenience caused and ask for your understanding and patience during what is an incredibly challenging time for everyone.  Our thoughts go out to all customers, colleagues and families affected by the virus.

Mid Devon District Council, 2nd April 2020"

*** A Message for you from Allerbridge Chapel and St Matthew’s Church ***

People and businesses across Mid Devon are responding with amazing energy, and community spirit to the challenges we face. While we must look after our own health and that of our families and friends, among our community there will be those vulnerable and in real need of material and psychological support, particularly during isolation at home.

Community contacts list

The latest list of community support groups across Mid Devon can be found on our Community support across Mid Devon page. For all other parishes, please contact Age UK Mid Devon on 01884 255369 in the first instance.

We'll update this list regularly as more information becomes available. The links provided may re-direct to a third party website. We cannot guarantee the information contained within them, so please exercise your own due-diligence and best judgement when using the help on offer.

How can I get my community group added to this list?

If you're involved in a group and want to add it to the list below, please email jbodleyscott@middevon.gov.uk.

I want to setup a new group. What guidance is there?

Mid Devon District Council

Various Updates - 25 March 2020

Textiles

From tomorrow, Thursday, 26 March, reusable textiles such as clothes, sheets, blankets, curtains, towels, shoes, handbags and belts will no longer be collected as part of your fortnightly kerbside recycling collection service, or any of the clothing banks in Devon until further notice. This is due to the area of this service provided by our contractor (the Salvation Army who processes the textiles collected by all Devon authorities), now being classified as 'non-essential'.

In the meantime, if you have any textiles that are reusable, please keep hold of them until these restrictions can be lifted, at which point we anticipate that charities will be in urgent need of clean and wearable donations.

Property Services

1. Play areas

In line with the government's instruction concerning social distancing and the Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, we've now closed all Mid Devon District Council operated play areas in Mid Devon.

2. Public toilets

Due to the impracticability of ensuring our public conveniences can continuously meet the required hygiene standards and to prevent the spread of the Coronavirus (COVID-19), in partnership with our Town and Parish Council's, we've taken the decision to close all public conveniences within Mid Devon until further notice.
