Shobrooke Parish Counci                                                                                                              5th December 2017

Dear Jane,

Financial Support for Ring and Ride, Wheelchair Accessible Car and Voluntary Car Service – 2018-2019

I would like to ask your Parish Council to kindly continue to support those members of your community needing special help with transport and who are increasingly relying on our services.

Crediton & District Community Transport Association are operating under an umbrella organisation Tiverton & District Community transport Association.  We are a registered charity who now provide the transport services in the Crediton and District area and are fully committed to helping people with special transport needs, offering freedom and the opportunity of independence to the frail, elderly, rurally isolated and disabled people.

As a charity we would therefore like to ask if Parish Councils, when setting up their budget, would consider allocating the funds to financially support the operation of the Ring & Ride Bus, Voluntary Car Service and our Accessible Vehicle Scheme. Any money that is donated to the Crediton & District Community Transport will be solely used for the said scheme.

We are offering a Ring & Ride service once a week from the Shobrooke area that provides a lifeline for residents who are not able to use public transport.  They are also able to benefit from our voluntary car scheme and our Wheelchair accessible vehicle service 7 days a week to get to essential appointments and access local facilities and services.

If your Parish Council would like us to hold a short presentation at one of your meetings to inform people in more detail of the services we provide, we would be more than happy to do so.  Please just contact me if this is something you would like to set up.

We also have some exciting news to share – in January 2018 we will be launching our new name… Mid Devon Mobility

We feel this new name is more focused on what our charity is trying to promote and it encompasses both Tiverton & Crediton under one united name.

Please find enclosed a copy of our Annual Report, if you would like any further information please don’t hesitate to contact me.

I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Yours sincerely

Hayley Hillman

November 2017

Dear Shobrooke Parish Council,

Donation to Citizens Advice 2018/19

Torridge, North, Mid and West Devon Citizens Advice offers a free service to members of the public across the Mid Devon area, providing advice and information for the benefit of the individual and the community. Many members of the public come to us in difficult circumstances when they have no one else to turn to.

We pride ourselves on our credible reputation for giving high quality advice. To ensure our volunteers are providing this standard, we continually update and support our volunteers with training on complex enquiry areas. Training is a large expense for our organisation. We receive no financial help from our National Body, and operate as an independent charity. We have noticed a drop in Government funding as cuts are made, and we are aware that this may have an impact on our service within the local community.

Over the past year we have noticed an increase in clients choosing to access our service through digital means. As a result of this, we are developing other avenues of communication in the form of web chats, email and telephone advice to meet the demands of the public and ensure that people do not suffer due to their inability to access face-to-face support. Since its launch our volunteers have been part of a Devon wide telephone service (Adviceline), which enables more people in the community to access our advice who may not be able to make it into their local office.

Despite this, our face-to-face advice remains a vital part of our service and last year (2016/17) 30 clients from your Ward came to our offices for advice and information on 78 individual issues. The biggest enquiry area in the Ward of Newbrooke was Working & Tax credits. Last year in Mid Devon we helped clients to receive over £1.3 million of income gain to which they did not know they were entitled. This financial support was then brought back into the local economy.

For every £1 of Local Authority funding we receive, we generate £2.67 in fiscal benefit. We would be extremely grateful if Shobrooke Parish Council would consider making a donation to this valuable service to enable the residents of your Parish to continuing accessing free, independent, confidential and impartial advice. Thank you for your continued support.

Yours faithfully, Vicki Rowe- Chief Executive Officer

Agenda Item 9.5

Dear Jane,

My husband and I recently purchased Shobrooke Mill which includes the remains of an overshot waterwheel which is in a very dilapidated state at present.

We are currently searching for potential grant-awarding bodies to assist us with the restoration of the watermill which we hope will serve the following purposes in the future:

  1. Preserve local heritage and industrial culture in the form of a local asset which had been fundamentally important to the local community for centuries
  2. Open the mill buildings and working waterwheel to the general public
  3. Facilitate education projects with local schools and other interested groups e.g. parish council(s) and history groups
  4. Generate hydroelectricity and install a community energy scheme in order to contribute to long-term local sustainability and the prevention/relief of fuel poverty

Potential funders are more likely to support projects which can demonstrate a beneficial impact and which have enlisted public support by raising awareness and seeking the endorsement of groups and individuals with a voice in the local community.

To that effect we were hoping to gauge Shobrooke Parish Council's and Newton St Cyres Parish Council's possible interest in and enthusiasm for the project and whether the Council(s) would be prepared to support the project by issuing a letter of support.

We would also be immensely grateful if you could advise of or share our contact details with any local networks, organisations, businesses and/or individuals who might be interested in becoming involved with the project development.

We look forward to hearing from you. Thank you.
