Agenda Item 11

From:

Ann Varker (Minister, Crediton Methodist Church) & Ian Barnard (repair volunteer and donor, and project lead for Crediton Repair Cafe)

Background:
With Crediton Methodist Church as lead applicant, and supported by CAG Devon, we have just applied for funding to the Communities Together Fund of Devon CC, for part of the setup cost for six bi-monthly Crediton Repair Cafe events.

This request:

First, apologies that due to timing of the deadline for submissions for CTF funding on Sunday 30th September we weren't able to ask this earlier - we are seeking letters of support from community organisations in and around Crediton, to present as local support for the Crediton Repair Cafe to the CTF committee. This meets to decide on our funding application on 29th October, so we are hoping to get letters of support to them before that meeting.

Project overview:

Repair Cafés http://repaircafe.org/en were first developed in the Netherlands and form a growing international movement with thousands across the world. There are now over 100 in the UK, with a growing number in Devon (currently 5). The aim of a Repair Café is to change society's attitudes, to encourage a culture of repair and reuse and reduce black bin waste. Repair Cafes offer an opportunity for people to share their skills, often between generations and bring back expertise that is being lost.

A key element of a Repair Café is promoting social cohesion and they provide an opportunity for people across the community to come together and make connections in a friendly and informal setting.
These actions result in cost savings for the community, a reduction in carbon emissions and an opportunity to promote volunteering.

During the first 3 Repair Cafes held by Blackdown Hills Repair Café between February and July 2018, they repaired well over 100 items including electricals, computers, furniture, bikes, clothing and toys, with at least 15 volunteers at each session, and over 100 members of the public attending each event. This is now sparking other local parish councils to consider setting up other groups nearby, which the group have offered to advise.

The Crediton Repair Café will collect similar data to demonstrate the impact that it is having. The nearest Repair Café is Exeter or Tiverton, which is too far to expect most people to travel to have an item mended. Having a cafe in Crediton will enable local people to have their items fixed.

Events are free to enter and items will be fixed for free, and we will be seeking donations only to cover the running costs, with funding needed for part of the startup costs. We have already received offers of assistance with from local businesses and will be seeking more support from businesses and individuals in the run up to the first event. We are also keen to enlist volunteers to do some mending - if you're interested please get in touch with Ian Barnard on 07578 690226 or by email volunteer@creditonrepaircafe.org.uk - we need people skilled in sewing, furniture, toy, electrical, mechanical, bike, electronic, computer repair.

Our first event is pencilled in for 10am-1pm on 17th November in Crediton Methodist Church halls. Subsequent events will be bi-monthly.
