Stoodleigh History Group would like to remember World War I by telling the stories of some of those who served - at home and abroad. If you have a family member who was involved in the war in any way - not just serving in the armed forces - please tell us their story.

If you know anything of the men who are commemorated in St Margaret's Church, please let us know. Of the sixty-four listed seven died. What happened to the others?

To contact the History Group, please email stoodleighweb@gmail.com

Squadron Commander Dunning

Further research was carried out by the History Group in 2018 and it was noted that the Dunning family moved into Stoodleigh Court in 1896, having bought the Stoodleigh Estate. Their second son, Edwin, went to Osborne and then Dartmouth Naval Colleges. In 1905 he became a midshipman in the Royal Navy. He then became a pilot and served in the Dardanelles, rising to the rank of Squadron Commander. See further information about Squadron Commander Dunning.
