Snow came on 31 January during a cold spell and turned Ash Woods, Stoodleigh into a winter wonderland and provided a white patchwork apron up to Stoodleigh Beacon

January 2018

The gales on 3 January 2018 sadly took out a large part of Stoodleigh's Echo Tree! This historic beech tree stands on the edge of the valley on the outskirts of the village and has offered a highlight for several generations of the Stoodleigh community. We stopped and called across the valley and awaited the wonderful echo to return. If you haven't discovered it yet, take a walk from Vials Corner towards Ash Cross and the remains of this great beech can be found at the bottom of Ash Lane ......... and go ahead ......... do what individuals and families have done before .... give a shout!

The lonely view of what's left of the Echo Tree as you walk from Vials Corner towards Ash Cross

A cross section of one of the main branches that was ripped away in the gales - neatly sawn and tidied by Devon County Council highway staff as they made the road safe afterwards.
